This week, we’re pleased to share how our classes are bringing our new school value of Community to life in meaningful, everyday ways.

Across the school, students have been exploring what it looks like to belong, to care for one another, and to work together as a team so everyone feels safe, included, and ready to learn. Here’s a snapshot from our Reception classes, who have been doing some beautiful learning around kindness, teamwork and being “bucket fillers.”

D22 – Mrs Wheatland and Miss Kristie

As a class, we discussed the value of community and shared our ideas about what it looks like, feels like and sounds like. We captured our thinking on a class anchor chart, with each student signing their name to show their commitment to building a positive, harmonious community and contributing their own colours and drawings in a piece of our puzzle heart.

Community in Reception 🌈

In Reception, we have been focusing on our school value of Community. We have been learning that community means working together as a team, looking after ourselves and others, and making sure everyone feels safe and included.

As part of this learning, we have been talking about being “bucket fillers.” We learnt that everyone has an invisible bucket, and when we are kind, helpful, respectful, or encouraging, we fill someone’s bucket. When buckets are full, people feel happy, calm, and ready to learn.

The students have been practising filling buckets by:

  • Using kind words

  • Helping and including others

  • Respecting personal space

  • Working together and taking turns

It has been lovely to see our Reception students building a strong sense of community in D21 and showing care for themselves and those around them.

Schultüte

In Germany, children traditionally receive a Schultüte (school cone) when they begin school. This special cone is filled with small treats and gifts to celebrate the start of their learning journey.

At Craigburn, we have embraced our own version of this tradition as a way of building a strong sense of community within our school. Our Year 6 student leaders create the Schultüten and proudly present them to our Reception students, helping to welcome them into school life. This tradition reflects the care, connection and leadership across year levels, as older students support and celebrate our youngest learners.
